Greater Manchester Police have issued a warning after a spate of drink driving arrests followed England’s win over Germany.

Pubs and bars were extremely busy, while many others chose to watch at home with a drink or two.

Police said “sadly” there were several incidents resulting in drink driving arrests in the hours following the game.

A post from the North West Motorway Police said: “Good Morning folks, what a result for England fans!

“Sadly afterwards there were a number of arrests for drink driving.

“Patrols are now out & will be actively stop checking drivers to ensure no one is driving whilst still drunk as the only thing that sobers you up is time!”

Manchester’s Trafford South Divisions said: “Think before you get behind the wheel this morning.

“Were you drinking last night?

“Could you still be over the limit?

“It takes longer than you think for alcohol to fully leave your system. If in doubt, don’t risk it – the consequences could be fatal.”

Police teams released some details of drink driving incidents both on the evening of the match and the following morning.

One man was found to be around five times the legal drink driving limit after officers stopped him in Wigan, pulling him over for the manner of his driving.

“Quite how anyone can think it is acceptable to get behind the wheel in such a state is appalling”, GMP Wigan West said on Twitter.

“Undoubtedly a life saved this evening” they added.

Similarly, a drink driver was taken to hospital after leaving the ring road and crashing into trees between Ashton and Denton.

His roadside breath test “exceeded the limit of the machine”, said North West Motorway Police, who also confirmed he was released from the hospital with “minor injuries”.

In another incident in the north of the city, a driver was pulled over for speeding as well as drink driving:

“Last night, Traffic officers XT54 stopped this vehicle in Urmston for driving at 43mph in a 30mph zone.

“Turns out the driver was uninsured and unlicensed!

“Roadside breath test also conducted with result of 48! Driver arrested for all offences.”
