A week-long operation in Suffolk caught over 200 drivers committing a variety of traffic offences, including six arrests on suspicion of drug driving.
Running from October 10-14, the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team, Road Casualty Reduction Team, and the Commercial Vehicle Unit ran the operation on three major roads, including support from the HGV tractor Unit.
The tractor unit allows officers to see directly into the cab of other lorry drivers as well as get a clearer view of other van and car drivers.
Officers stopped 116 HGVs and 68 smaller goods vehicles during their investigations for a total of 216, with a total of 258 offences detected. Six were arrested on suspicion of drug driving, while a seventh was arrested on suspicion of possession and driving while disqualified.
Outside of the arrests, the remaining offenders were issued with Traffic Offence Reports (TORs), with some having committed more than one offence.
The most common offence was not wearing a seatbelt, for which police issued 120 TORs, while 41 were caught driving while using a mobile phone. 33 motorists receive a TOR due to the poor condition of their vehicle, 25 for transporting an insecure load, and 13 for driving without due care and attention.
Only four drivers were cautioned for speeding, and a further four were found to be driving without insurance.
Tim Passmore, Suffolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Well done to everyone involved in this successful operation. Another excellent example of the Constabulary’s proactive approach to enforcement resulting in our roads being safer for us all.
“It’s very disappointing that drivers – particularly those who rely on their driving licence for their livelihood – still need to be reminded about something so obvious as putting on a seat belt or not using their mobile phones.
“And to think a driver could get behind the wheel under the influence of drugs is quite unbelievable.”
“I just can’t understand why anyone would risk their own life and the lives of others by driving when either they, or their vehicle, is unfit for the road.”
