A man who ploughed into a woman in her 70s after she pulled over in a lay-by has been jailed for drink driving.

The 709-year-old Lincolnshire woman had noticed a crack in her windscreen had become larger and pulled over to inspect it and await assistance on the morning of November 15, 2020. The 46-year-old man “lost control” of his Audi A6, crossing the main carriageway and colliding with the woman’s Toyota Aygo.

She died of her injuries the following day, while her granddaughter who was in the front passenger seat suffered minor injuries.

A roadside breath test showed that the man was over the legal drink driving limit, and an evidential test later found him to have 181mg alcohol per 100ml blood – more than twice the limit of 80mg.

Detective Sergeant Luke Wells, Serious Collision Investigation Unit, Lincolnshire Police, said the man had been drinking the previous evening. He warned: “I have a very clear message, don’t drive if you have consumed alcohol or taken any form of illegal substance; it’s that simple. Don’t be responsible for someone else’s death.”

After pleading guilty to drink driving and causing death by dangerous driving, Lincoln Crown Court jailed the man for three years, four months, banned him from driving for a further three years, and ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £190.
