“Disorganised” Driver Crashed BMW While Over the Limit, Lacking Insurance and MOT

A woman described in court as “disorganised” has been handed a three-year driving ban after crashing her BMW while over the drink-drive limit — and doing so without valid insurance or MOT.

Lucy Margetts, 43, of Wilton Road in Feltwell, appeared before King’s Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after being arrested in Methwold Hythe on 11 January. The court heard that she was involved in a single-vehicle crash in foggy conditions, with temperatures plunging to -5°C.

Police attending the scene noted that Margetts initially attempted to leave but stalled the vehicle. Officers observed that she was slurring her words, and she subsequently failed a roadside breath test. She was arrested at the scene.

Further checks revealed the BMW had neither a valid insurance policy nor an MOT. A later evidential blood sample returned a reading of 100mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood — well over the legal limit of 80mg.

Margetts pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving without insurance, and driving without an MOT. Due to a previous conviction in 2022 for failing to provide a sample, she faced a minimum three-year disqualification.

In mitigation, duty solicitor George Sorrell said: “Ms Margetts lives on her own. She is supported today by her mother, who comes to court with her and will take her home. She pleads guilty, and I would like to emphasise that she co-operated fully with the police — there was no sort of animosity.”

Mr Sorrell added that Margetts regularly goes for drives to help manage her mental health and “clear her mind”, which she was doing at the time of the crash. He explained, “Her insurance had only just run out,” and that she “is the first to admit that she is sometimes a bit disorganised in her affairs.”

Magistrates imposed a three-year driving disqualification, with the option to reduce the term by 36 weeks if she completes a drink-driving rehabilitation course. She was also fined £120, ordered to pay a £48 victim surcharge, and £85 in court costs.
