A Cumbria man has appeared before magistrates in Carlisle after police clocked him speeding on the M6 and then found him to be drug driving, too.
The court heard that officers were carrying out speed checks on the southbound carriageway on March 13 when the 26-year-old went past, recording a speed of 97mph.
After pulling him over a drug swipe tested positive for cannabis, with further analysis finding him over the legal drug driving limit of 2mcg THC per litre of blood. THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.
Mitigating, Lauren Heasley said her client was of previous good character and believed the drug would be out of his system, having consumed it some twelve hours previously while socialising with friends.
“He seeks to make no excuses to the court,” she said. “He breeds and shows dogs around the country. If that is to continue he will have to rely upon the goodwill of friends, thus putting other people to inconvenience.”
After hearing a guilty plea to drug driving, chair Jeff Forster told the man “This is going to be an expensive trip out” and imposed a fine of £500 plus court costs. The man was also banned from driving for twelve months.
