A man who led police in a pursuit at speeds of up to 120mph while drink driving has been spared jail.
The 32-year old was speeding towards Watford when he came off and then crashed into a roundabout at Junction 22.
Police later found the man after he fled the scene of the accident, where he failed a roadside breath test.
St Alban’s Crown Court heard the police first spotted the man on June 25, 2020, where he was speeding along High Street, Potters Bar. They said the speed at which he had been travelling made their car shake.
Other officers spotted the car a few minutes later, describing his driving as “erratic” before the man drove onto the M25 and pulled away at speeds of up to 120mph.
An evidential breath test following the pursuit and his subsequent arrest found him to have 47mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal drink driving limit is 35mcg.
Mitigating, Peter Saville told the court that other passengers in the car had egged him on to drive faster, and “this was the mistake that woke him up”.
He added that his client had been furloughed from his job as an HGV driver, and he had now given up his job.
Describing the incident as a “prolonged course of bad driving”, Recorder Stan Reiz said there was a larger culpability on the part of the defendant.
After pleading to drink driving and dangerous driving, the man was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work. He was also banned from driving and must pay £425 in costs and charges.
